Project

I took on this project to participate in the GIT Awards 2022 at Arizona State University. I was intrigued by this challenge because it presented a unique and complex problem, especially considering my lack of prior knowledge in this field. While the project initially had limited scope, the final solution I came up with was rather straightforward.

As I continued to learn and refine my skills, I found myself returning to this project with the aim of making it more comprehensive and sophisticated. Over time, my research efforts uncovered valuable insights, which allowed me to create a more practical solution. In this case study, I'll guide you through the process I followed to design this app. I hope you find it both informative and engaging! Additionally,

As I started this project, I wanted to understand the art and museum world's challenges better. So, I did some online research, and here's what I found:

  1. The majority of museum-goers typically spend under an hour during their visit, and a common challenge arises from the absence of guides, which often leaves visitors with limited knowledge about the museum's contents.

  2. Long queues and the absence of online ticket booking options indicate a growing need for more convenient access to museums. Streamlining the ticketing process could enhance the visitor experience and reduce wait times.

  3. Museums often fall short in providing comprehensive information about the artists and their works on display. Visitors who wish to delve into the artistic context may find themselves lacking essential background information.

Visitor Numbers To Major Art Museums Collapsed In 2020

New data published by The Art Newspaper shows that the Covid-19 pandemic has proven disastrous for major museums and art galleries.

Museum Pass still has LONG queues at Versailles

In the past, we have always heard buying the Museum Pass and using it at Versailles allowed you to skip the long queues.

Some museums have witnessed declining attendance at their exhibitions. This may be attributed to various factors, including changing visitor preferences and a perception that museums no longer offer novel or engaging experiences.

Most people want an easy way to learn more about museums and galleries. They like to double-check things before they go. But sometimes, it takes a lot of steps to get everything ready. For some, they've seen the same old art over and over again in local museums. They're hoping to find something new and exciting, a different kind of art they've never seen before.

A significant portion of the population remains unaware of the digital tools available for museum interaction, including virtual tours, educational apps, and online collections. The digital divide exacerbates the issue of museum inaccessibility.

The things I found online helped me come up with good questions to ask during our chat. Here are some of the questions I asked, although I adjusted them based on our conversation:

  1. How often do you visit museums or galleries each year?

  2. How do you learn about upcoming museum exhibitions or art events?

  3. When you're interested in an artist, how do you find info about their past works and exhibitions?

  4. How do you find out where an artist's works are currently exhibited?

  5. How do you typically book museum exhibition tickets—online, in person, or other?

  6. What influences your decision to attend a museum exhibition? Any specific features or info you seek?

  7. Have you faced challenges accessing artist and exhibition details? Any specific experiences?

  8. How do you stay informed about exhibition changes or updates once you plan to attend?

  9. Are there any features or tools you wish existed for easier artist info and ticket booking?

  10. Do you prefer using museum apps or websites for exhibition and artist info? What features do you find most useful on these platforms?

Before moving on to the next step in designing, I wanted to see if there are other apps that are trying to solve the same problem. I looked at how they work, what makes them special, and what features they have. By doing this, I could figure out where there might be things missing in their apps, which can give us ideas for what features to include. I looked at things like how the app works for users, how it looks, how easy it is to move around in, how organized it is, how easy it is for everyone to use, and the overall experience it gives

In this project, I became proficient in the iterative design process.

  1. It was a journey where I kept making things better by really paying attention to what users were saying and changing things to fit what they wanted. This whole experience made me realize that design is like a never-ending process of getting better, and it's the users' ideas that help us come up with new and better things

  1. It also underscored the importance of a global perspective in my design approach. I learned to consider diverse cultural, language, and regional differences when creating designs, ensuring they are relatable and accessible to a worldwide audience

Overview

Problem

In today's fast-paced society, art and museums are facing a declining interest, primarily due to the overwhelming demands on people's time and the numerous distractions competing for their attention. This trend poses a significant challenge to preserving our cultural heritage and maintaining a vibrant art community.

Goal

The goal is to rekindle and revitalize public interest in art and museums. Aim to inspire a new wave of enthusiasm among art lovers and the general public, making art and museum visits an engaging and rewarding experience for all. Through innovative solutions, I intend to create a cultural resurgence that not only appreciates the value of art but also acknowledges its significance in our shared history and culture.

Market Research

Primary Research

User Interviews

After doing secondary research, I wanted to learn more about the issues people have. So, I talked to some art enthusiasts in a casual conversation to get their thoughts.

Interesting Insights

“ Knowledge Gap and Lack of Awareness”

Most people interested in artworks lack awareness and knowledge about art and museums.

Many do not visit museums frequently due to busy schedules, finding art exploration time-consuming.

“ Overwhelm and Intimidation”

Some individuals feel overwhelmed and intimidated when visiting museums or galleries, leading to a sense of being lost.

“ Planning and Exploration”

Most visitors require a simplified way to find information about museums and galleries before planning their visits.

Some seek to explore new and fresh genres rather than repetitive art pieces.

There's a need for a digital solution for ticket booking, as many visitors still buy tickets physically upon arrival.

Competitive Analysis

Before moving on to the next step in designing, I wanted to see if there are other apps that are trying to solve the same problem. I looked at how they work, what makes them special, and what features they have. By doing this, I could figure out where there might be things missing in their apps, which can give us ideas for what features to include. I looked at things like how the app works for users, how it looks, how easy it is to move around in, how organized it is, how easy it is for everyone to use, and the overall experience it gives
